EMANUEL AND LENORE VARDI MUSICAL INSTRUCTION |
|||||
EMANUEL VARDI BIOGRAPHY One of the preeminent string pedagogues in the world, Emanuel Vardi’s illustrious musical career has spanned over 70 years. His vast knowledge, unparalleled experience, and unrivaled virtuosity and musicianship prompted the title “Master of His Instrument” by the New York Times. His remarkable versatility and expertise ranges from the orchestral knowledge he gained from his association with Arturo Toscanini, as the youngest member of the famed NBC Symphony Orchestra, to chamber musician and renowned viola virtuoso. He has been a member of numerous chamber ensembles and string quartets such as the Stuyvesant, Mishakoff, and Guillet String Quartets, along with the famed Navy String Quartet during WWII which also included violinist Oscar Shumsky and cellist Bernard Greenhouse. He has established himself as conductor of such ensembles as the Concertmasters of New York, the Adelphi Chamber Orchestra, and the South Dakota Symphony, which he conducted for 6 seasons, and was awarded an honorary doctorate from Yankton College for his work in music for the state of South Dakota. He has also become known as a composer of movie scores and classical music with an emphasis on his compositions for the viola. He is best known, however, as an incomparable viola virtuoso, with tours taking him throughout the world during his long career. He is the only violist to have ever recorded all 24 Paganini Caprices, a recording that has just been re-mastered and re-released, and he is the only violist, besides William Primrose, to have ever given a solo recital in Carnegie Hall. Highly regarded as a pedagogue, Emanuel Vardi’s students can found in major orchestras throughout the world, and as first chair players, chamber musicians, and soloists of the first rank. He has coached not only violists throughout his career, but also some of the most well-known violinists and cellists of the concert world. Following a severe accident in 1993 which aborted his concert career, Emanuel Vardi has dedicated himself to painting his abstracts of musicians, and to imparting his vast musical knowledge and experience to others. As a professor of viola, Dr. Vardi has taught on the faculties of Temple University, the University of Illinois, and the Manhattan School of Music, and has given master classes throughout the world. LENORE VARDI BIOGRAPHY In 1990, he joined forces with his wife, violinist Lenore Vardi, and formed The Vardi Duo, which has performed throughout the US, Canada, and Great Britain. Finding that their teaching styles were so compatable, they also joined forces as pedagogues when Lenore became his assistant and then his teaching partner at that time. |
VARDI TEACHING MISSION
While their teaching styles are somewhat different, they each bring their own unique qualities to the music studio, and their focus on a holistic approach that deals with, not only repertoire and technique, but with the physical mental, and psychological aspects of study and performance, makes for a truly unique and highly beneficial experience for the student. Using a clarity and simplicity of expression, along with boundless enthusiasm and a non-judgemental approach, the main purpose of the lesson becomes one of going to the root of the problem that the student is encountering leading to permanent solutions, rather than simply attacking symptoms in the playing. Understanding of the composer’s background and intentions, harmonic structure and theory, and musical style and history is emphasized and explored in the lessons while at the same time, knowledge, confidence, and an environment that allows for the full artistic expression of the performer is securely built. The Vardi’s approach is to uncover, nurture and develop the student’s unique musical, technical, and artistic abilities and means of expression, and to provide a sound technical and musical education that is personally geared to the individual. Confidence is built and the joy of playing, along with the acquisition of knowledge from the Vardis vast experience, is the primary goal, and the development of the well-rounded musician and artist is the final objective. The Vardis have made Port Townsend WA their home since August of 2006.
